The little girl knew what to do.
As soon as the yelling began she would jump, lightning quick, out of her bed, corral her groggy younger brothers, and run out to the old shed at the edge of the property that faced the canal. Experience had instilled in her the urgent necessity of this routine that far belied her years.
THE BODY

It appeared from around the top of the island. Very classical – face down, arms and legs stuck straight out. It’s hard to say who was the first to see it. It was just a quiet drink’s party on a balcony overlooking the Nile. I think it was already snared in an old tree beside the river when it became a common curiosity.
